چکیده

Interest in the metabolic fate of formic acid has been renewed as the result of recent experiments showing active incorporation of carbon-labeled formate into normal body constituents of the pigeon (l-3) and the rat (4, 5). Prior to these findings, enzymes capable of catalyzing the oxidation of formic acid had been reported, widely distributed in plant and animal tissues (6). Only in the case of a preparation from green peas was the reaction well defined, however. Adler and Sreenivasaya (7) demonstrated that direct reduction of diphosphopyridine nucleotide (DPN) by formate was catalyzed by dialyzed pea extracts. This finding extended the work of Andersson (8) who had shown that DPN was necessary for the reduction of methylene blue by formate in such preparations. The object of the present study was to obtain additional information about enzyme systems capable of oxidizing formic acid. Studies on the enzyme from green peas were therefore extended. Attempts to demonstrate the presence in animal tissues of soluble enzymes capable of oxidizing formate were also made and were successful in the case of rat liver and kidney.

Formate Metabolism by Animal Tissues*?

Many studies on the metabolism of formic acid by a variety of animal tissues have shown that an appreciable portion of this substrate is oxidized to carbon dioxide (6-13). Since the initial observation of Battelli (6) and Battelli and Stern (7) on the oxidation in vitro of formate, various uncorrelated attempts have been made to identify the responsible enzymes to explain the mechanism of this ...

Electrooxidation of Formic Acid and Formaldehyde on the Fe3O4@Pt Core-Shell Nanoparticles/Carbon-Ceramic Electrode

In the present work, the electrooxidation of formic acid and formaldehyde; potentially important fuels for future fuel cells, was investigated on the Fe3O4@Pt core-shell nanoparticles/carbon-ceramic electrode (Fe3O4@Pt/CCE). The Fe3O4@Pt nanoparticles were prepared via a simple and fast chemical method and their surface morph...

Effects of the anion adsorption and pH on the formic acid oxidation reaction on Pt(111) electrodes

The effects of solution pH and anion adsorption for the formic acid oxidation reaction on the Pt(111) electrode have been examined using electrochemical techniques. Regarding the pH effects, it has been found that oxidation currents for this reaction increases as the pH increases, which indicates that solution formate is involved in the reaction mechanism. Unexpectedly, the adsorption of sulfat...
